Here's are some of the FAQs from the book launch zoom....
What was the most challenging thing about writing the book? It's my first novel. I'd never written fiction before, so I had to learn about doing that (thanks to all that helped) and it's self published, so that was another steep learning curve.
What was the most joyful thing about the book? Holding it in my hand, seeing it in print. I'm amazed I've done it: 95,000 words. Phew!
Why doesn't the Old'un have a name? The Old'un is the main character in the book. It is unusual for the main character to be a 79 year old woman. We discussed this in respect of dystopian novels we knew, finding mostly young/er main characters there. Someone said 'Peter Ustinov in Logan's Run: the old man at the end,' but it was agreed he was not the main character. The Old'un doesn't have a name because she is every older person. We all need to choose life. Anyone could be the Old'un.
Is it dystopia or is it now? When I began the book there were no plans for a Right to Die Bill in the UK, but there were plenty of examples of the rise in hate in our society, especially against vulnerable and marginalised people. Ageism and Ableism continue, and increase. Disabled people are mocked, assaulted and stripped of support. Older people are considered 'economically inactive' and also stripped of support. Refugees and asylum seekers are rejected, demonised and assaulted. This is happening now and it should not be. History is forgotten and we have to remember it.
There's more God talk in the book than I expected. A statement more than a question and yes there is, although the mix with violence and episodes and strong language might shock some who think Christians don't live in the real world. My faith has certainly become harder since I retired. I am challenged how to live the Way of the Cross-wise One everyday. I draw on the stories that have encouraged me and those I've shared steps with. I walk on with the Remembered Bible in me, and yes this is the book.
Who will play the Old'un in the Netflix Series? Sheila Hancock and Alison Steadman were suggested. I always thought that Beryl Streep (sister of Meryl) would play me in the film of my life, so I suggest her.

Will there be a sequel? I don't know. It took me eight years to write this one. But some are eagerly awaiting book 2. The theme of community building needs to continue but don't hold your breath. It might take a while.
